About me

I am Yusif Valiyev, a Biological Sciences undergraduate at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). My research interests include molecular biology, cellular mechanisms, stem cells, and the origin of life. I am fascinated by the fundamental questions underlying biology: how molecular interactions give rise to complex living systems, how cells maintain their functions, and how understanding these processes can help explain both the emergence of life and the development of disease.
Originally from Kish, a village in Shaki, Azerbaijan, my interest in science grew through years of studying biology and participating in national and international science olympiads. These experiences strengthened my analytical thinking and encouraged me to look beyond established knowledge toward the questions that remain unanswered. Over time, I became increasingly interested in understanding life not simply as a collection of biological facts, but as a complex system whose underlying mechanisms can be investigated through scientific research.
My research experience has introduced me to both environmental research and field-based biological investigation. I co-authored a scientific publication examining radionuclide contamination in the Okchuchay River, exploring the environmental implications of contamination in a transboundary river system. I am also conducting an independent project documenting plant biodiversity in the Shaki region, combining field observations, species identification, and botanical documentation. Although these projects differ from my primary interests in molecular and cellular biology, they have helped me develop a more systematic approach to scientific inquiry and strengthened my appreciation for careful observation, evidence, and scientific communication.
Education has also been an important part of my scientific journey. As the co-founder of Lagosta Academy, I have helped mentor more than 500 students preparing for biology competitions, including students who have earned medals at national and international olympiads. I have also authored biology educational materials and contributed to olympiad training initiatives in Azerbaijan. Through these experiences, I have come to see education and research as closely connected: both depend on curiosity, critical thinking, and the willingness to explore questions beyond what is already known.
At HKU, I hope to deepen my understanding of biological systems and gain the theoretical and experimental foundation necessary for independent research. I am particularly interested in exploring the molecular basis of cellular processes and the origins of life, while remaining open to new questions that emerge through coursework and laboratory experience. In the longer term, I aspire to pursue doctoral-level research and contribute to fundamental discoveries in biology.
My ambitions are also connected to where I come from. I hope to use the knowledge and research experience I gain internationally to contribute to the development of science in Azerbaijan, support young researchers, and help create opportunities for scientific investigation in emerging fields. Ultimately, I want to build a career driven by fundamental questions about life while contributing, in my own way, to a stronger scientific community.
This website documents my academic journey, research interests, publications, and ongoing projects as I continue to develop as a scientist.
